Celebrating More than $13 Million Donated to Support the Campaign for Building Excellence in Emergency Care

The Sameth Emergency Department at Morristown Medical Center, a designated Level I Regional Trauma Center, provides urgent, life-saving care, as well as state-of-the-art evaluation, diagnosis and treatment for the most critical patient cases. We are pleased to announce that thanks to the generosity of our community, more than $13 million has been donated to expand and modernize the Sameth Emergency Department at Morristown Medical Center and Gagnon Children’s Emergency Department at Goryeb Children’s Hospital. Resounding donor support helped to exceed the campaign’s $12.5 million goal in just about two years’ time. Special thanks to Bill Marino, chair of the Campaign for Building Excellence in Emergency Care, for his extraordinary leadership throughout this critical project.

Donor Impact

The Sameth Emergency Department is one of the busiest in the state, averaging close to 100,000 patient visits per year with a two percent annual growth. This high-volume department operated at 100 percent capacity pre-pandemic, with patients and stretchers often overflowing into the hallways. COVID-19 only exacerbated the situation. To address burgeoning patient volumes and to treat higher-acuity patients, updating the department’s technology and facility became crucial. Donor support is helping to create an Emergency Department of the future to accommodate 30,000 additional patient visits per year, provide a clinically superior patient environment and improve operational flow to ensure team members can continue providing extraordinary care.

Philanthropy is helping to:

  • Relocate the Gagnon Children’s Emergency Department to an expanded space within Goryeb Children’s Hospital. The new area features separate walk-in and ambulance entrances for pediatric patients.
  • Increase the number of treatment rooms/bays from 61 to 120.
  • Relocate and expand the Adult Behavioral Health Unit, providing a healing environment with natural light, soothing colors and enhanced patient comforts.
  • Equip the department with the latest, best-in-class technology, including an advanced CT scanner to abbreviate imaging times.
  • Modernize Morristown Medical Center’s trauma elevators, renovating the existing cars and adding two additional cars to support and expedite rooftop helicopter arrivals.
