Donor-Funded Lecture Series Supports Nursing Education

More than 150 nurses discovered new techniques on how to manage stress better and use mindfulness as way to be more present while on the job as part of the Peter H.B. Frelinghuysen, Jr. Distinguished Lecture Series on November 18 at Malcolm Forbes Auditorium. Meg Soper, RN, humorist and motivational speaker brought her brand of funny mixed with years of first-hand experience as an operating room nurse as she discussed, ‘Bring It On… Strategies for Balance & Resilience’. The Frelinghuysen Foundation began this lecture series in 2013 in memory of the late Congressman Peter H.B. Frelinghuysen’s long service to the community. Their generous gift established an endowed fund for the sole purpose of enhancing nursing education at Morristown Medical Center.

The lecture series is instrumental in bringing the classroom to the hospital several times a year by allowing nurses to listen to experts covering topics ranging from the impact of health care reform to advances in technology to best practice models. Nurses in attendance receive continuing education credits from the New Jersey State Nurses Association.

Lectures in the series have included: documentarian Carolyn Jones discussing end-of-life issues in hospice and palliative care situations through the lens of her film, “Defining Hope”; Dr. Tim Porter-O’Grady speaking on health care reform; and Naomi Judd sharing holistic practices that cured her from Hepatitis C.
