Darrin Charitable Trust Grants $2.5 Million to Sameth Emergency Department Renovation, Expansion

Sameth Emergency Department (ED) at Morristown Medical Center

The Margaret A. Darrin Charitable Trust is well known for providing transformative funding to organizations whose missions support the basic needs of the local community. In line with this mission, recently, the trust granted $2.5 million to support the Sameth Emergency Department (ED) at Morristown Medical Center’s renovation and expansion, specifically funding the purchase of an advanced CT scanner.
“Our mission is to empower and transform the lives of people in our community who find themselves unexpectedly overwhelmed in extraordinarily adverse circumstances,” Michael Hanifin, Margaret A. Darrin Charitable Trust trustee, said. “When individuals are facing a health crisis, nothing is more important than effective treatment to restore good health.”
The purchase of an advanced CT scanner is a part of the first of a two-phased project to modernize the ED. Phase one will equip the ED with best-in-class technology, and phase two will focus on the expansion. In crisis and emergencies, the faster a physician can reach an accurate diagnosis, the better the chances for survival. The advanced CT scanner (a GE Revolution Apex diagnostic imaging unit) has cardiovascular, neurological and pulmonary screening capabilities. It will provide physicians with the ability to scan patients around the clock, use less radiation per exam and and shorten the imaging time for pediatric patients with no need for anesthesia.

Margaret A. Darrin

The Margaret A. Darrin Charitable Trust has generously supported Morristown Medical Center with a series of major initiatives over time. During the pandemic, the trust supported COVID-19 patients by funding the upgrade of 11 exam rooms into negative-pressure rooms, which protect against the spread of airborne infection. Because of the trust’s $235,000 grant, the ED has a complete unit equipped with this highly specialized technology.
The trust also gave generously to the Growing Forward Campaign, specifically earmarked for the renovation of the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center lobby, to provide a convenient, one-stop, outpatient care experience.
“Morristown Medical Center is a leader in providing outstanding cutting-edge medical care,” Hanifin said. “The hospital must constantly continue to upgrade facilities and develop new technologies to provide the community with the highest standard of medical care possible. We hope that our gifts will inspire others to join us in this vital mission. “
