Donor Funding Leads to New Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center

052521-111-Cardiopulmonary-Rehab-10-story.jpgThe late Joan and Collier Baird Jr. set aside money in their will decades ago to advance medical care at Morristown Medical Center. Today, as a result, patients with chronic respiratory diseases and lung disorders can breathe a sigh of relief. Last spring marked the opening of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center at 111 Madison Avenue in Morristown, New Jersey. The milestone was celebrated with a dedication ceremony and made possible through a testamentary trust for $440,000 that the Bairds had allocated in their will, which came to fruition soon after Joan Baird’s passing in 2014.

Individuals from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and beyond come to Morristown Medical Center each year for highly specialized pulmonary care. Seeking treatment for various lung disorders – including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, asthma and lung cancer – patients receive top-flight medical expertise to boost pulmonary function and restore balance to their daily living activities. “We strive to provide best-in-class comprehensive and individual patient care,” David Sousa, MD, medical director of Pulmonary Rehabilitation for Morristown Medical Center, said. “It has been a long and winding road to get to this day. Our efforts started long before COVID-19, and while the pandemic delayed us a bit, the team pushed on. Today we are excited to be in a place where we can have a program that will have a meaningful impact on the lives of our patients, and I look forward to getting started.”

Donor funding plays an integral part in creating impactful patient care. The Bairds lived most of their lives in the Morris County area and, like the generations of Bairds before them, were always seeking new ways to give back to their community. For Morristown Medical Center patients and their families, the Bairds made a marked impact that will positively benefit generations to come.
