The Valerie Fund: Filling the Needs of Children and Families
Most parents don’t realize that, when a child is seriously ill, the whole family needs treatment. Supporting the psychosocial needs of children during their illness and the needs of their families is precisely why the Valerie Fund has given $200,000 to the Valerie Fund Children’s Center at Goryeb.
“The family is impacted in ways that aren’t apparent on the surface,” says Barry Kirschner, executive director of the Valerie Fund. “It is of highest priority for our organization to bring this kind of much-needed support, which is often overlooked.”
The Valerie Fund has generously provided for the Integrative Medicine Program, a social worker, child life specialist, psychologist and educational liaison at Goryeb this past year.
“The most effective way to treat a child is to treat the whole child in a facility close to home,” says Mr. Kirschner. “We believe this kind of treatment is an essential part of getting a child and his or her family back on their feet in the best manner possible.”
